If You Wasn’t @ the EmergeTradeShow, It Went Down

First off, I want to say thanks to Sherreth Stewart, Raymond Sancristobal (at the bottom), the whole Fior Entertainment family for making the Emerge Trade Show possible for these brands to showcase their art and passion for streetwear.

The show was a great success on Day1 with the many brands that showed up from over the US, Canada, and even a London-girl(yes, she had the accent. real sexy). They showed us their art, talked business, and made moves establishing new retail locations while growing followers amongst the attendees. This being the first year of the event, Day 2 started off right with DJ Entice laying some vibing mixes to set the tone for the show. Later, we would get the much anticipated fashion show with special guest Lila Nikole , from the same name collection. Beats bumped in the background as models strutted down the catwalk while cameras flash and attendees got a look of alot of nice gear. If you ask me, the afterparty took the cake over at the Grass Lounge where everyone lounged with new partners or connects. Well, up until 1AM. (Due to the graphic nature of the unprofessionalism that took place at the lounge, you only get these pics). Later

Upscene S/S 2010 “War From Within” Mesh Snapbacks

As a prelude to their upcoming collection, New York City brand Upscene releases a set of mesh snapbacks inspired by the “War from Within” waged everyday. The caps feature a traditional gold leaf embroidery on the bill with a two tone design to accompany the contrast stitching. Look for these at Upscene webstore and at varies NYC retailers.

Interview: Seeking The Throne

If you didn’t notice by now, I really don’t do alot industry interviews of such. I prefer bringing you the brands that are in the streets and establishing real a name for themselves. SeekingtheThrone is one such brand, out of L.A.. After a brief call, the crew let me know more than I thought I did. Including, their work with the youth in the area.

MSW> Would you please introduce yourselves to the world?
STT> We are Jose and Elias, Co-Owners of Seeking the Throne. We’re a streetwear clothing company based out of Los Angeles.

MSW> Your brand name and logo are both very unique. Could you please fill us in more for those
that don’t know?
STT>Well, the name “Seeking the Throne” reflects those that are out there working towards their dreams and goals. Whatever it is in life that you’re trying to accomplish, you are always looking to be on top. No one wants to be second best at what their doing and that’s how the name was born, we’re also trying to be on top. Our logo is very different. We wanted to create something that was completely apart from what everyone else was doing and I think that we’ve accomplished that.

MSW> I understand you guys have plenty inspirations including some major brands. Why are the kids
such a big focus for Seeking the Throne as a brand?
STT> Well, kids are the future there’s no doubt about that. We want to try and encourage kids to go for their goals in life rather than just settling for the regular 9-5 j.o.b.(JUST OVER BROKE). We don’t really have a set age that we want to target, we want anyone and everyone to be able to wear our brand. I think that its more important for us to just market our brand and let it evolve and grow organically rather than pushing for a certain market or genre.

MSW> How are you generating buzz in the streets of L.A. for Seeking the Throne?
STT>We started by going to Art shows around the LA area and blogging about them and that’s where most of or traffic came from in the beginning. We still attend Art shows, but now we’re also just hitting the streets and talking to regular kids. Something that has really helped us along the way has been Twitter. We started our twitter page @seekingthethrne roughly 3-4 months before we even released anything and the amount of support from everyone was amazing. We are very grateful for everyone that has supported us since the beginning.

MSW> What do you have in the works down the line for your Seeking the Throne followers?
STT> We want to expand the brand with some cut and sew products, as well as more head wear & accessories. We’re also trying to work with galleries and stores to hold events to show everyone that we appreciate all of their support. Other than that , we’re just trying to come up with more designs for future seasons.

Green Hill Clothes

Kellen Peterson is the brainchild behind the up and coming brand, Green Hill Clothes. What started as a simple project in 2008 at the Art Institute in Seattle has become a real life dream for Kellen. I got to talk to him recently about his brand, sports, and other things to pick his mind. Dude is real cool and seems like a big kid at heart. Just don’t bring up the OKC Thunder around him. Seriously, Kellen is adding his “Art of Fresh” into streetwear and I can’t wait to see more. Heres a little of what we went over.

MSW> I know that you are very diverse person from your background and your love for different cultures. But what’s the major inspiration behind Green Hill Clothes?

KP> The major inspiration behind the GHC is my love of clothing and fashion. I have a large collection of graphic shirts from my childhood to now. I am always interested in clothing that stands out above the rest and will grab attention. I knew I was interested in fashion when I won my school’s contest to design the logo for the uniform we all had to wear when I was in 6th grade.

MSW> Who are you targeting your brand towards?

KP> We are targeting our brand to anyone who wants to wear fresh clothing at the moment. When trends and fads change and go through their stages, our style will reflect and create the trends and fads of the moment. The demographics of the people we target have an interest in street wear and are teenagers to late 30′s. Everyone is invited to live a Green Hill style and experience the art of fresh!

MSW> What are some the plans for the future as success builds for Green Hill Clothes?

KP> We have many plans for the future that I have actually written down on a checklist. First thing is that we want to have more products produced and designed by us like shoes, jeans, hats, watches, jackets, etc. We also plan on throwing events, getting fans involved. I am also a huge supporter of charities and helping out others, so I plan to help out charities with a good cause.

I want to start a clothing line for kids called “Midori”, (The Japanese word for Green. http://greenhillclothes.com/midori). I also want to begin another line branching off of the GHC by the name of “Golden Ginza”, (http://greenhillclothes.com/goldenginza) featuring a high end, high quality feel.

The largest goal that is on my list at the time is to have Green Hill shops opened in select cities around the world starting with Seattle. That’s my current list for the moment but won’t end there.

MSW> How are things in school now that you have a growing clothing company under your wings?

KP> Having a clothing line and going to school at the same time is a great experience because many classes I take, involve having to do collaborative projects with fellow graphic design students and students in a different fields like photographers. This allows me to network with people that want to be part of the clothing line experience. Many of my projects I work on are related to the GHC and that gives me opportunity to receive critique from classmates and teachers.

MSW> I’m sure nowadays with GHC you’re staying quite busy. Tell me about any events or sponsorships that Green Hill Clothes has or will be taking part of?

KP> The most recent project I have worked on was to design a shirt for a non profit organization, Hopefirst, and a bike company, Kona Bike, on an project called, Bikes to Africa, that will help out girls in Gambia. (http://thegreenhill.wordpress.com/2010/04/12/bikes-to-africa-campaign/)

With musicians, my first major collaboration will be with an up and coming artist by the name of GMK. We worked on a photo shoot last month: http://gmkbrilliantreality.com/2010/04/green-hill-clothes-x-gmk-photoshoot/) and we are currently in the works of a GHC x GMK series of shirts to be sold during GMK’s concert tour. Other musicians we are in the works with are Jugga Hill, Dj Suspence of the Saturday Knights and Two Story Zori. A mixtape by the GHC by the name of G-Sounds will come out soon featuring these and many more artists.

Bird Club Clothing | NIKE CARNIVORE & AIR JORDAN 6 “PISTONS” Tees

Those of you who already copped the Nike Carnivores or the Air Jordan “Pistons” will be glad to see these new releases from Bird Club Clothing. There are two versions of the Carnivore tee with options between the Vulture or TRex designs. While the Jordan 6 “Pistons” tee features a fistful of Championship rings design depicting the inspiration behind the sneakers. BlackGrapes Collection 2010 Photoshoot Leak

The guys over at BlackGrapes Clothing has just finished up on a photoshoot for their new release slated to drop soon. Heres some behind the scene cuts from the shoot in the Bay Area featuring family and local artist The first piece from the new collection is the “Trust Is A Luxury” tee which is white with a few trim colors for the typo. I was told this is just a small taste of things to come by my peoples over there. BlackGrapes is making a push to put street back into StreetWear with skaters, bikers, and a deep community of inspiration.

Streetwear: Bird Club Clothing

While sure for some hometown flavor, I came across the Bird Club Clothing line. After checking out their new lookbook, I caught up with designer/creator Sam SUarez for an interview about his line.

MSW> Whats the history behind your Bird Club Clothing?

Sam> As consumers and sneakerheads, we always had ideas as to what we would make better. After much brainstorming, we just jumped into it. With no experience in t-shirt making or anything. And here we stand. The line was actually a thought since 2004 but our first t-shirt was introduced in 2006 at Sneakerpimps Miami. It was the K.R.E.A.M (Kicks Rule Everything Around Me) tee. Which by the way we are the originators of that saying and its trademarked.

MSW> Who is behind the creation and design of the line?

Sam> I do most of our designing and marketing..occasionally for more detailed designs we send them off to our graphics designer. But 95% of all of our products have come from ideas that pop in my head. I write things down hourly. Some ideas never get used some do.

MSW> Whats the meaning behind the name, Bird Club?

Sam> I came up with the name bird club because I wanted to make clothes that were simply “fly”. So, I thought birds always fly right!? So its been Bird Club ever since. And you can kinda twist it with the other birds that come through Miami (wink, wink). You can see a little taste of that in some of our tees.

MSW> I see some of your influences are some major sports team in Miami(Go Canes!!!). What are some of other influences that help inspire your line?

Sam> Yeah we always take time to represent the home team in whatever way possible, whether it be sports, other clothing lines, crimes, the drug trade or the lifestyle. We just want to see Miami get the recognition that is deserved when it comes to the streetwear. Sort of like L.A and New York. Also music, art, and our experiences have been a great influence.

MSW> Your line is available in New York, Texas and, of course, here in Miami. But who are you targeting your label towards?

Sam> We’re in the process of making a nationwide push. We’ve tried to put an age range on our clothing, but that does’nt seem to work. Weve seen all ages wearing our products, which has been a very rewarding feeling. We just try and make tees that don’t go in and out of trends. Something you can wear now and still be able to wear 5 years later. Simply because the design is timeless.

MSW> The industry is a cluster of wannabes. What sets your line away from that cluster?

Sam> Wannabes will eventually self-destruct on their own. We focus on our product and how to improve it to maintain afloat. We do this because we enjoy ourselves. We don’t think we’re better than anyone else and we give props where they are due. We basically keep it 100 if you keep it 100 with us! We have fun with this.

MSW> What else do you have planned for your line that you want your customers to look out for?

Sam> Lookout for several varsity jackets, bathing suits, more fitteds, and a couple of random & unique accessories both home and clothing. Hopefully some collaborations with other brands to put the 305 on the map.
