Streetwear: Bird Club Clothing

While sure for some hometown flavor, I came across the Bird Club Clothing line. After checking out their new lookbook, I caught up with designer/creator Sam SUarez for an interview about his line.

MSW> Whats the history behind your Bird Club Clothing?

Sam> As consumers and sneakerheads, we always had ideas as to what we would make better. After much brainstorming, we just jumped into it. With no experience in t-shirt making or anything. And here we stand. The line was actually a thought since 2004 but our first t-shirt was introduced in 2006 at Sneakerpimps Miami. It was the K.R.E.A.M (Kicks Rule Everything Around Me) tee. Which by the way we are the originators of that saying and its trademarked.

MSW> Who is behind the creation and design of the line?

Sam> I do most of our designing and marketing..occasionally for more detailed designs we send them off to our graphics designer. But 95% of all of our products have come from ideas that pop in my head. I write things down hourly. Some ideas never get used some do.

MSW> Whats the meaning behind the name, Bird Club?

Sam> I came up with the name bird club because I wanted to make clothes that were simply “fly”. So, I thought birds always fly right!? So its been Bird Club ever since. And you can kinda twist it with the other birds that come through Miami (wink, wink). You can see a little taste of that in some of our tees.

MSW> I see some of your influences are some major sports team in Miami(Go Canes!!!). What are some of other influences that help inspire your line?

Sam> Yeah we always take time to represent the home team in whatever way possible, whether it be sports, other clothing lines, crimes, the drug trade or the lifestyle. We just want to see Miami get the recognition that is deserved when it comes to the streetwear. Sort of like L.A and New York. Also music, art, and our experiences have been a great influence.

MSW> Your line is available in New York, Texas and, of course, here in Miami. But who are you targeting your label towards?

Sam> We’re in the process of making a nationwide push. We’ve tried to put an age range on our clothing, but that does’nt seem to work. Weve seen all ages wearing our products, which has been a very rewarding feeling. We just try and make tees that don’t go in and out of trends. Something you can wear now and still be able to wear 5 years later. Simply because the design is timeless.

MSW> The industry is a cluster of wannabes. What sets your line away from that cluster?

Sam> Wannabes will eventually self-destruct on their own. We focus on our product and how to improve it to maintain afloat. We do this because we enjoy ourselves. We don’t think we’re better than anyone else and we give props where they are due. We basically keep it 100 if you keep it 100 with us! We have fun with this.

MSW> What else do you have planned for your line that you want your customers to look out for?

Sam> Lookout for several varsity jackets, bathing suits, more fitteds, and a couple of random & unique accessories both home and clothing. Hopefully some collaborations with other brands to put the 305 on the map.

Last Rights Presents MNF @ Hotel Victor

Last Rights is hosting a Monday Night Football party at the sweet Hotel Victor on South Beach, Miami. They’ve got a 30ft projection screen, 2 for 1 beers, great food, giveaways and DJ K-Razor handling all the music. Theres also a dope ass swimming pool overlooking Ocean Drive and South Beach. So, show up for all the fun on the Rivalry Monday Night Football match between the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets. Oh yea, Go Fins.

NO MORE SKULLS

I believe the creative aspect in the streetwear industry is withering away. Skulls are on everything fucking design I lay my eyes on when I go and try to cop something new off the rack. I’m not going to come out and say I haven’t bought a skull print or design tee. Raise your hand if you don’t have a shirt with a skull somewhere on it(like i thought). There are plenty of inspirations out there to bring customers something new and fresh. The giants in the game are force feeding us crap after crap, which I call “HYPE”, like we don’t know whats going. Streetwear is not about hype last time I checked. The fashion industry in whole is about moving forward but also not forgetting where the inspiration for it all came from. Being innovative and creative are vaules that I love about the streetwear culture. This skull thing is just like the throwback thing or the autotune shit going around in hip hop but the skull thing has lasted. Consider this my letter to the giants: go back to your roots and produce quailty designs we can admire. I’m out.

On Saturday, I had the privilege to meet an aspiring young designer/skateboarder by the name of Reggie Forde. Reggie may seem like your average 15 year old, but you might want to think again. With his passion for boarding and streewear he is intent to bring his label, Junk Fuel, to the world. The basic idea for the label was inspired one day while eating at a local fastfood spot back in may of 2008, eating junk food of course. The name as he explains ” Basically represents the people out there who get a boost after eating junk food to fuel them through any activity”. Who can’t relate to that? The designs range from burgers, sodas and other snacks placed on tees and boards. Reggie has his hands in every aspect of his label but has a great supporting staff in his family and friends that contribue to his success. He believes in the brand and wants to expand the line-up for future releases to include accessories: socks and laces for now. Shops from around the country are already hitting this kid up to stock up on his products. Now that his label is a year older, Reggie wants to expand his reach overseas to Dubai and establish a one-of-a-kind skate shop in a area that is lacking such retailers. 10.Deep – Proud To Be A Problem – Lookbook – Fall 2009

A few weeks ago, 10. Deep dropped a preview of the Fall 2009 line, Proud to be a Problem, and now comes the Lookbook of the collection. The brand has come a long way and have pushed the envolope on their collection. Some of 10. This is some very interesting news for the lady sneaker aficionados out the there. Reebok has teamed up wit Londaon-based singer, stlyist, magazine founder and editor Namalee on a pair of new Super Chic Freestyle Hi sneakers. I’m going to officially call these, Wonder Womans. The sneakers look real clean with the metallic touch and the flag around the ankle wrap with the two golden straps. Cinderalla, I found your kicks right here. This collab is embodying the spirit of the Freestyle heritage and the strong females that rock them so well.

10.Deep Presents: Donnis-Diary of an Atlanta Release and Event

10. Deep has alot going on this week. I just got the press release this morning and I only wish i could go to the party. Make sure to head over to the 10. Deep web store to get more of last season’s tees. Theres more information about the party after the break.

When we said that this week was going to be huge for 10.Deep, we weren’t kidding around. With the upcoming release of our Fall 09 lookbook, which drops Wednesday August 19th, and our mixtape project with Donnis, we figured it was about time to check our intellects at the door at least for a few hours with a party that will either make the morning papers or the police blotters.

We are honored to have loaned our influence to the playlists that now populate your radio with mixtape releases from Wale and Kid Cudi, but this week we present to you a new addition to your summer soundtrack. Diary of an Atlanta Brave, the Highly anticipated mixtape from southern spitter Donnis will be hitting the web this Thursday August 20th.

NYC is due for some excitement this week as we will also be marking the occasion of the mixtape release with a celebration in Brooklyn. The “Diary of an Atlanta brave” release party will be a dance floor adventure with the decks manned by the likes of Just Blaze, DJ Benzi and Million Dollar Mano.
